Can there be such a thing as a light mountain bike (a bike going cycling into the forests)? I purchased one at Wal Mart and another at CSH (Trek) and so they both appear hefty. Any tips for a light fat under $400 mountain bicycle for a middle schooler and a grown-up? TIA.

Yes. I purchased an utilized Gary Fisher and my wife bought an used Stump Jumper. These two tend to be lighter than my 9 year old children's Specialized bikes. Paid $125 and $100 correspondingly plus they are the best bicycles we have had. I purchased all of them from folks at the job that ride adequate to justify updates every couple of years and got money saving deals. Have a look at Craigslist or the classifieds.
